Officer Diego Moreno of the Kent Police Department (WA) was killed in the line-of-duty on Sunday, July 22 in the early morning hours.

The incident started about 1:50 a.m. when officers responded to shots fired at the Shari's restaurant on W. Meeker. Officers were in the area and heard the gunfire. When they arrived, witnesses pointed out a red pickup truck and police started a pursuit heading westbound on SR 516.

The truck somehow managed to turn around and headed back toward officers. The officer who died tried to deploy the spike strips and that's when he was struck by another officer pursuing the pickup. That officer then crashed into three cars at a nearby intersection. He was critically injured.

The truck continued eastbound on SR 516 for about a mile where it crashed into a car. Several suspects fled the scene. One was arrested and two others are at large.

"Make no question about this, were it not for the actions of this suspect or suspects, this officer would be alive today. It's directly because of the suspect or suspects' actions that led to the officer's death" Washington State Patrol Captain Ron Mead said at a news conference at Kent City Hall.

Officer Moreno is survived by his wife, Shelly. Officer Moreno was an 8 year veteran of the force.
